Paras Precision HFS

The Paras Precision HFS uses only slightly more water than full Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS), but significantly less than other HFS solutions on the market. However, it is a significantly simpler and often a more affordable option for environmentally friendly fish farming than RAS with biological water treatment. The technology has been tested and developed for several years with excellent results. Fish grow faster than in recirculation aquaculture systems, production costs and risks are lower, and the challenging purging phase and loss of biomass is not typically required before selling the fish.

What is a Hybrid Flow-through System (HFS)?

A Hybrid Flow-through System (HFS) is an advanced aquaculture technology for land-based aquaculture. A hybrid flow-through system combines the best of two technologies: simplicity and economic feasibility of a Flow-Through System (FTS) and the water quality control and lower environmental impact of a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS).

In a typical hybrid flow-through system, 40-70 % of the water is reused, which enables high water quality without the need for biological water treatment, typically managed by a biofilter. Lower water reuse rate simplifies the system but makes it difficult or even impossible to control water temperature, disinfect new water or manage nutrient loading from the production.

Low water reuse rate restricts the utilization of loose HFS technology in areas where water resources are limited, water temperature profile is not ideal, environmental loadings need to be minimized and therefore high recirculation rates are required.

What is Precision HFS?

Precision HFS enables new level of control and water reuse intensity compared to less water intensive hybrid flow-through systems on the market. In a Precision HFS, all water parameters, including water temperature, can be fully controlled and optimized based on the requirements of fish in any given tank. Tank specific, demand-based water parameter optimization decreases fluctuation of water quality parameters, which leads to better feed-conversion ratio (FCR) and increases fish health.
