Nilakkalohi’s Tervo facility has a long history in Finnish aquaculture: among other things, it previously served as the home of the national selective breeding programmes for rainbow trout and whitefish.
Nilakkalohi wanted to develop its operations with environmentally responsible technology. Rising water temperatures in summer also highlighted the need for better control of production conditions. The investment was intended to support production growth, particularly the production of larger juveniles for offshore farming.
Objectives
Paras Aqua delivered the Precision HFS production solution, based on hybrid flow-through technology. The system enables efficient water use, temperature regulation and precise control of water quality.
Commissioning included adjustments and fine-tuning as the technology was brought into production use. The collaboration continues with the collection of data on production performance, environmental impact and energy consumption.
Nilakkalohi and Paras Aqua were also the main implementers of a broader nutrient recycling project. Paras Aqua supplied the technology and coordinated the project’s research component. The project aimed to recover nutrients from fish farming for agricultural use, supported by Paras Aqua’s chemical-free sludge collection and thickening technology.
According to Nilakkalohi, operations have progressed well since the first fish were transferred to the Paras tanks in mid-May. Both the facility and the technology have performed reliably throughout the start-up phase.
Relative to the volume of fish, day-to-day routines at the new facility are fairly easy compared with farming in raceways and conventional hatchery halls. All operations, including feeding, are largely automated.
“What has mattered most to us is that the technology works as designed and the fish grow as expected. The workload has been a positive surprise: relative to the volume of fish, day-to-day routines at the new facility are considerably lighter than in raceway farming or conventional hatchery halls, as all operations, including feeding, are largely automated. The owners of the facility have also been pleased with its performance.”

Now that the facility is in full production, the collaboration continues with comprehensive data collection, enabling fine-tuning and further development of both production and the technology.
